How do I order a custom knife?

The knives I make fall into two categories. Firstly, knives I make with no specific owner in mind, one of a kind kitchen tools that I make “for fun”. These can be purchased on this website through the store.

The second kind are custom orders that reflect the ideas and desires of the customer. I aim to have the customer involved in as much of the process as possible so they can own a truly unique piece that they can call their own.

To begin the process, I typically need as many details as possible about the knife you’re after.  Shape, size, style, length, steel preference, handle materials, intended use, etc. the more information the better. If you’re unsure on any of these details feel free to contact me and we can talk through it, I also have featured stories of my past work on my Instagram if you’re looking for inspiration.

So much will the knife cost? That depends on the details mentioned above, but I have developed a general rule of thumb below:

The cost for a High Carbon Mono Steel (eg. 1084)) is AU$ 80/inch blade length.

Add 25% to this base price for San Mai (3 layers) or 30% for Cu mai (3 layers with copper)

Add 30-60% for Damascus (depending on pattern complexity or layer count)

Essentially the longer it will take or the more labour involved the higher the price. There will also be a surcharge for more exotic steels or handle martials and shipping costs added

I tell most customers a standard monosteel kitchen knife (such as a santoku) will start in the $4-500 range, and from there the sky is the limit. If you want a million-layer Damascus 12 inch kitchen sword with a gold and mammoth ivory handle, I can do that.

While I endeavour to complete all knives as soon as I can, I ask my customers to please be patient. I will give you a time estimate upon quoting but this is always subject to change due to current orders, build complexity and life (while I spend most of my waking moments in the workshop, this is a part time business and life can get in the way).

My knives come with a lifetime garuntee. I aim to create something that will be used and passed down for generations. My knives are

high performance tools and as such need to be looked after appropriately (you wouldn't take a sports car off-roading). Like any tool they will require maintenance and occasional servicing. I will repair any knife that I have made for an appropriate fee and if the fault is mine, I will replace it.

If you have any questions about the process please contact me any time.
